System Administration SIG

Though often viewed as remedial in topic(s), sysadmin can be exciting and fun, and meeting to share knowledge can definitely be job and career enhancing, as we learn individually and together in this ever evolving discipline.

Interesting Stuff

Meeting Idea Proposals

  • Book Reviews - encouragement to get them submitted and write new ones - most sysadmin knowledge is documented in deadtree, and it would be cool to have a (quick) comprehensive listing here of the classic, useful, and indispensible texts of the trade.
  • Tutorial presentations - on aspects or elements of system administration by veterans for those new to *nix; for the experienced, a chance to brush up (and add a line to the ol' resume), for the neophyte, mentoring from an experienced pro is invaluable.
    • authentication - controlling log in, from shadow password to PAM
    • authorization - groups, users, permissions, etc
    • backup - full, incremental, offsite
    • disaster recovery - how to recover from hardware defects, software malfunction, or security intrusion
    • reporting & statistics - log watching, management, analysis, tools, etc
    • scripting for automation - although some tasks are just better done manually?
      • sh, bash for sysadmin - shell scripting is still very much used today
      • perl for sysadmin - the classic language for administrators
      • python for sysadmin - OS distributions have really started using python systemically for admin now e.g. Ubuntu
    • database administration
  • News - yes there is some news in sysadmin!
    • Standards, Best Practices
    • Certification
    • Vendor/Product Announcements
