Starting Your Own BizAs we cross over certain achievement levels or age values, it sometimes works for the best to start your own business. Are your skills sufficient to become a consultant? Are you "too old" to find a job? If so, start your own. From networking the Nano Tech industry, I learned that in Austin it was found that when there were 50 unemployed techies looking to do something similar, a new company was formed. Once you have a company, age is no longer an obstacle: you have "experience". The company can hire out it's expertise to other companies, using the experience base to market abilities such as Fortran, COBOL, e-mail administration, programming and more. If the company formed is of a virtual nature, you could work from home. Consider how often you have to actually physically touch a company computer for the work you do? Most administration work can be done remotely, most programming can be done anywhere. For those few times you have to actually touch a machine, that can often be planned in advance and negotiated with travel and expense to do so. What works best for your biz is keeping your expenses and overhead low. You also have to be able fill the niche that other entities need that don't exist. I switch to entities as this could be other businesses, schools, government offices, etc. Low overhead expense and filling a need will make your company viable. |
