Storage SIG summary by Robert Pearson, January 6, 2005Storage SIG SIG Leader(s): Kathy Hopkins, Robert Pearson Kathy Hopkins of Engenio is the spiritual and temporal leader of the Storage SIG. Not much happens when Kathy is out of town. We members need to step up to the plate and help move the Storage SIG forward. Storage SIG is somewhat misleading. It should be the Information SIG (iSIG). Data is a subset of Information. Storage is merely the enabling technology for Information. Storage is 100% Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), which is always an expense. Information has the only ability to make a profit. It can also make a loss. This profit or loss is known as Return on Investment (ROI). Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) is the new "buzz word" for the processes, procedures and structure to know which Information makes money, which makes no money but is required for company survival, and which does not make money and is not required for survival. Your company policy for that category of Information determines the Storage (enabling technology) requirement. The ILM can be defined by the five phases of:
