Review of Practical Postgresql by Blake Mitchell By John C. Worsley, Joshua D. Drake 1st Edition January 2002 ISBN: 1-56592-846-6 This review is for "Practical Postgresql". I found this book to be a fine example of both tutorial and reference books. All of the examples worked, with certain restrictions. The restrictions were all due to the fact that I was using different operation systems with different versions of Postgresql. The book was actually targeted for version 7.1.3. Obviously, one would expect some trouble using earlier versions, which I was, in almost all cases. This book took me through step by step examples of each of the different types of Database manipulation concepts. It began with Postgresql installation, continued with Database creation and manipulation and carried on through to the most complex concepts including programming in a Postgresql compatible language. Everything I tried worked as well as one would expect. This book even came with a CD containing everything a person needs to install and use version 7.1.3. I was not able to use the CD however, as the now somewhat outdated versions of Redhat linux I run did not have all the dependencies it needs. All in all, I would say that this is a book I will treasure as an on-going reference for many years. Blake Mitchell |
