Fink

The Fink project brings the world of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) to Mac OS X by modifying the GNU/Debian software so that it compiles and runs on Darwin and Mac OS X. Fink uses dpkg and apt-get software to provide powerful package management.

Why?

Using fink gives you most of the benefit of Linux (the debian software packages), without the trouble of installing or maintaining it. Mac OS is already based on FreeBSD ?, so the environment is Unix and very friendly; it just needs a good package manager and packages - which is what fink supplies.
